First-Date Spots That Kill the Awkward

If you're reading this, chances are you're about to take a leap of faith and go on a first date. Dating is hard, and I have had my fair share of awkward experiences, and tummy wrenching "should I just cancel" moments. One thing that always made me nervous was the reality that there could be a lot of awkward silences, small talk (which I hate), and fake moments. I'm the kind of person that likes to either have honest deep conversations or just have fun, and I image I’m not the only one.

Today I am in a very happy relationship, and I have had the opportunity to go to MANY great date spots in Scottsdale. So I'm going to share with you what I believe are the 5 best first-date spots that keep the awkward to a minimum and light first-date fun to a max.

If you're like me, and you need all the help you can get read on...

This restaurant is the perfect fit if you're into specialty cocktails and art. AZ88 always has cool art installations, and it's located in the middle of the The Scottsdale Civic Center. There's a great park to walk around, and lots to talk about. It will still give you intimate vibes, while allowing space for conversation involving subjects outside yourself and your past. (the drinks are also made with triple shots so you'll be loosened up in no time)

Postino is a favorite for date night, because of the ambiance and exciting vibe. Both the Scottsdale and Tempe locations have a romantic feel, and if you're looking for noise to cover up lack of conversation this is a good place to pick. The Tempe location is always busy with students, and pauses in conversation don't feel awkward. The Scottsdale location is less busy, but offers a more intimate setting. Make sure you call ahead to check wait time if you're going Mon or Tues.

The Hot Chick

This new arcade bar is all the rage in Old Town. If I were to go on a first-date this would be my choice. You can get snacks inside, or just stick to drinks from the bar. It's very relaxed, and the entire place is full of arcade games, basketball, and board games. If you're feeling nervous about conversations with your date, the games provide a great distraction and something to talk about. Even if you're not vibing with your guy, you'll still have fun. I recommend going during the week, as it gets pretty crowded on weekends.

Olive & Ivy

This upscale restaurant is a nice spot for drinks and snacks. I would stay away from getting a real dinner here as it may be a time commitment, but sitting close to the bar makes your date a little more casual while keeping the upscale nature. This restaurant also has high energy, and it'll be easy to make conversation after one of their flavored mojitos.

Top Golf

Lastly, Top Golf is a great activity for a first date. If you're the type that likes to get active and show your competitive spirit, then this is the right move for you. Guys are inherently competitive, and whether you're good at golf or not you'll have fun here. You can order food/drinks to your bay, and play as long as you like. It's also a short distance from old town if you hit it off and want to continue the night somewhere else.

So that's it! Good luck on your first date, and let me know if you had a great time at one of these spots!!
